C.G. Shewani worked in the saree industry for over 50 years. He started as a salesman at a saree store on Laxmi Road, Pune in 1971 at just 16 years old. For 30 years, he studied every saree he sold, learned the products, and studied the supply chain. That's when he noticed something was wrong.

Most saree retailers purchased Paithani sarees from wholesalers, who purchased from other wholesalers and added their margins, resulting in inflated costs for the final consumer. The markup chain was endless. The weaver earned less. The customer paid more. There had to be a better way.

At just 18 years old, C.G. Shewani began building relationships with weaver families in Paithan, Yeola, Banaras, Surat, Bengal, Odisha, and the South. These weren't transactions. They were partnerships rooted in respect and fair dealings. Nearly five decades later, those same weaver families still supply to Hastakala.
